Beyond the certificate: make your next qualification count
What Roothub’s Google Career Certificate scholarship story teaches Nigerian learners about completion, practical projects and career preparation.
By The Roothub ·

Enrolling feels good. Finishing feels better. But the most useful question comes afterwards: what can you now do that you could not do before?
That is how to approach a career certificate. Not as a shortcut past every hiring requirement, but as structured learning you can turn into useful skills and visible proof.
A partnership story with local roots
Roothub’s roughly 12-year journey began around 2014, according to its ten-year training account. That account describes Google’s involvement in Tech101 from 2018, connecting digital learning with communities across the Niger Delta.
The more recent Google Career Certificate scholarship work extends the learning story beyond one region. Roothub’s January 2026 recap reported that more than 2,400 people across Africa benefited from its scholarships during 2025. This is a historical, self-reported programme figure — not the number of scholarships currently open.

Read the outcomes carefully
In the same recap, Roothub reported a 65% course completion rate and said 15% of scholars landed jobs or internships. It also reported that 10% completed two or more certifications.
Those figures are encouraging, but the post does not explain its survey method or the denominator for each percentage. They should not be treated as independently audited outcomes, causal proof or your personal odds of employment.
The practical lesson is still clear: completing the learning matters, and completing it is different from securing work. You need a plan for both.

Choose a certificate that fits a role
Begin with your goal. If you want to work in data, examine the skills asked for in beginner-friendly data roles. If you want to improve a business, identify the task you need help with. Then compare the course content, prerequisites, estimated effort and access terms.
A familiar brand name does not make every course the right course for you. Check the current provider and scholarship details. Eligibility, availability and fees can change; a past programme announcement is not an offer of a free place today.

Give the learning a weekly home
Put realistic study sessions into your week. Make space for practice, not just videos. If a lesson is confusing, write down the exact point where you got stuck and ask for help.
Use community accountability kindly. Share what you completed, what you built and what needs work. Avoid comparing your week one to someone else’s year three.
- Set a sustainable weekly study target.
- Practise with the actual tools covered by the course.
- Keep notes on mistakes and how you fixed them.
- Finish a small original project before starting another certificate.
Turn completion into a stronger introduction
Add the certificate accurately to your CV and link to projects that show the skill in use. Explain your own contribution. Do not label practice as paid client work or call yourself an expert after one beginner course.
